The theme for the Meeting is “Maternal, Infant and Child Health and Development in Africa”, which pertains to Millennium Development Goals 4 (reduce child mortality) and 5 (improve maternal health). With only five years before the deadline for the realization of the Millennium Development Goals, the African Union is bringing this matter to the fore in order to harness political will and push forward implementation.
Other issues on the agenda of the Assembly include the appointment of members to the African Commission on Human and Peoples Rights; the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child; and the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights. Botswana has fielded a candidate on the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights in the person of Ms. Alice Mogwe.
The meeting of the Assembly will be preceded by the 17th Session of the Executive Council of Ministers, which will be attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Phandu T. C. Skelemani.
His Honour the Vice President and His entourage will return to Botswana on the 28th July 2010.
