Presentation of Letters of Appointment by the IOM Regional Director for Southern Africa


On 8 November 2016, Mr. Josiah Ogina presented to Hon. Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi, the Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation, Letters of Appointment as the Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for Southern Africa, based in Pretoria, South Africa. 

Established in 1951, IOM’s is the principal inter-governmental organization in the field of migration and works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and non-governmental partners, to provide advice on and services to migrants, including internally displaced persons, refugees, and migrant workers. As of June 2016, IOM has 165 Member States and 8 Observer States. In September 2016, it became a related organization of the United Nations.

The IOM Regional Office is based in Pretoria and caters for IOM activities and operations in Southern Africa. The IOM Country Office in Botswana was established in 2012. Cooperation between Botswana and IOM includes activities and projects on a wide range of migration issues. In 2007, Botswana hosted the Migration Dialogue for Southern Africa (MIDSA) Workshop. Botswana, as the Chair of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), also hosted the 2016 Technical MIDSA, in August, in Gaborone.
